Home About us Our objections News Contact us What can you do?

Stop Wyverstone Windfarm Action Group (S.W.W.A.G.) has been set up to oppose a proposal to build a wind-farm in Potash Farm in Wyverstone.

It is expected that Wind-power Renewables Ltd will apply for planning permission to build two wind turbines in Potash Farm.  Each turbine is 125m high (410ft) and will have a wing span near that of a Boeing 747 Jumbo jet.

A temporary mast is already on site measuring the wind speed.

S.W.W.A.G. is fighting to ensure planning permission for the windfarm is refused. Join our membership to register your protest about this windfarm and ensure your voice is heard.

You can do this by going to our 'what can you do?' page, and downloading our membership form.

Would you like to see the impact of these huge turbines on your environment? Then <<click here>> for an accurate visual simulation!

Many thanks to Robert Wilkinson and Scott Brookes for this simulation.

News update

The planning application for the wind farm at Wyverstone has been submitted & is being processed.

We are writing to ask you to write letters or e-mails of objection to the council by Tuesday 25th November. (This may not be the official date issued by the Council but will greatly assist us with our campaign planning). This is important to demonstrate the high level of opposition to this proposal.

Even if you have written to the council previously (e.g. about the wind monitoring mast), it is important that you write again as previous letters will not be counted against this application.

The letters can be as detailed or as short as you wish, but we do need high numbers to be submitted. It is a pure numbers game - the developer & landowner will also be encouraging people to write in support of the scheme. We ask that you send a separate letter/e-mail for each individual who objects, including children. Please encourage other friends, neighbours & family members (whether local or not) to write also!

Please quote the planning application reference number 3342/08 on your correspondence. If you e-mail, please remember to include your address & telephone number.

Send e-mails to John.Pateman-Gee@midsuffolk.gov.uk or write to John Pateman-Gee, Senior Planning Officer, Mid Suffolk District Council Offices, 131 High Street, Needham Market, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP6 8DL.

Individually written letters are given more weight by the Planning Officers than standard letters or petitions, so please write your self - even if it is just a few lines. To help, here is a list of some of the reasons for objection raised to us by members for you to use in your letters as you wish:

  • Size & scale – effect on landscape
  • Proximity of proposed turbines to local houses
  • Noise
  • Concerns re construction & access to the site
  • Proximity to bridleways & footpaths of Hundred Lanes network
  • Effects on TV reception
  • Shadow flicker
  • Possible effects on health of people living close to the turbines
  • Effects on local bat populations
  • Effects on other local wildlife (e.g. birds & badgers)
  • Possible irreparable damage to ancient hedgerows around historic Hundred Lane & Kiln Lane
  • Aviation issues – effects on military radar, low-flying planes & helicopters – impact on Gt Ashfield airstrip
  • Precedent – more turbines may follow
  • Effect on house prices
  • Please copy your letter or e-mail to your District Councillor & MP also – contact details below:

Fundraising

We need to keep raising money & need your continuing support.

In order to scrutinize & oppose the application as vigorously as possible, we are recruiting the help of a number of experts to look at certain areas of the application – these include a Windfarm Consultant, Noise/Acoustics Specialist, Landscape Architect and a lawyer from an Environmental & Public Law firm.

We estimate that we will need to raise approximately £12,000 to fight this first stage of the application process to completion.

Thanks to your kindness already, we have already raised some funds but need to keep going! Please give whatever you can afford as every penny counts, but if every one of our 600+ members were to donate £20 each, we would meet out fundraising target.

Please send cheques payable to SWWAG to:
Ann Coxhead, SWWAG Treasurer, Orchard House, The Street, Wyverstone, Suffolk

New developments

A new book is to be published shortly about the emerging health impacts of living near wind turbines. It calls for a minimum 2km separation distance between turbines & peoples homes until urgent further research into the reported problems is conducted.

It is written by an American physician Dr Nina Pierpont. It differs from the information put about by the BWEA (British Wind Energy Association) in that, being a doctor, she is medically qualified to comment upon the effects of wind turbine noise & low-frequency noise upon the human body. The BWEA literature quotes acousticians who are qualified only to measure noise levels & are not trained to interpret its possible effects on the body.
